Car Seat Laws
Keeping Lone Star Kids Safe
What's New
Updated 16 Dec. 2014
Texas and the United States Pediatric Society, (USPS,) have issued a recommendation that all children age 14 or under 120 pounds be placed in a three point harness car seat with the new, 'Get in the Seat, or Walk With Your Feet,' campaign. Although the law doesn't officially take effect until 1 March 2015, law enforcement officers and the USPS are urging parents to put their children at least in booster seats. Some USPS members have argued that it's best to keep children in rear-facing car seats up to 13 years old, or when knees meet the chest, but pediatric spinal professionals say that a booster seat will provide enough protection for most.
Parents are also looking forward to the new law. Kim Hoffman told Texas, 'It's about time we made these changes. Official reports have told us for years that children should be in car seats until they are at least 120 pounds. This needs to be a law across America.' That may not be too far in the future; Lawmakers in Kansas, Utah, Washington and Mississippi are already enacting these laws, while states like California and New York have taken it one step further and placed the age and weight limit at 15 years old or 145 pounds.
Texas' 'Get in the Seat, or Walk With Your Feet,' movement will be met with a hefty fine if not followed. Violators will be fined a minimum of $200, and be required to take a day long car seat safety course. Sherriff Don McDunkan told Texas, 'We're just trying to look out for the kids, and thankfully, most kids seem pretty excited about the car seats. It just goes to show that safety is a real concern of theirs, and it helps that manufacturers are making cool car seats for the teens.'
Car Seat manufacturers like Greco have been on the forefront of making trendy, affordable car seats for the older crowd, with character car seats like Spiderman, Spongebob and My Little Pony. For more information on the new car seat laws, call your local DMV.
